ATTEMPT AT BESTIALITY.
Arthur H Green was charged with attempting to commit a beastly and unnatural offence upon a Newfoundland slut at the Royal Hotel, Mururundi [sic], recently. The Crown Prosecutor stated that the prisoner was in service at the hotel as a groom, and one of the servants having had occasion to leave the kitchen to go into the wash-house, caught the prisoner in the act of attempting to commit the abominable crime.
The arresting constable stated that he arrested prisoner at the Royal Hotel, Murrurundi, and charged him with attempting to have connection with a Newfoundland slut named Rose. When arrested, prisoner said, “Nice b—– thing; I know nothing about ir,” and when he was at the stable door, the prisoner made an attempt to draw a knife (produced), saying he wanted to pare his nails. After this, when being taken to the lockup, prisoner said, “Did you catch me at it;” and witness replied “no,” to which the prisoner added, “Well, how the hell can you prove it?”
Margaret Lone, a servant employed at the hotel, deposed to having caught prisoner in the act of attempting to commit the offence; had occasion to leave the kitchen to go to the wash-house, where she observed prisoner behind the door in a half-sitting position with the slut between his legs. (Witness hare gave further proof, the facts of which are unfit for publication.) Prisoner stated he would be the means of shortening witness’s days if ever she breathed a word about the matter.
Kate Heelay, another servant, gave corroborative evidence.
Upon the customary question being put by the Judge as to whether he had anything to say in defence, the prisoner remarked that he had nothing whatever.
After a short retirement, the jury returned a verdict of guilty of an attempt to commit the crime.
Prisoner was thereupon sentenced to five years’ penal servitude, and to receive a whipping of twelve lashes in Darlinghurst gaol on the 31st March.

ATTEMPT AT BESTIALITY.
Arthur William Green, a middle-aged man, was charged with having at Murrurundi, on the 29th February, attempted to commit this abominable offence.
Accused pleaded not guilty, and was undefended.
The particulars of the case were of a disgusting nature. The offence, which took place in a kitchen at the Royal Hotel, Murrurundi, was proved by two female servants, one of whom he threatened for giving information.
The jury, after ten minutes’ deliberation, returned into court with a verdict of guilty.
His Honor said that he would have a letter handed in from a resident of Murrurundi; in which the writer stated that the accused met with an accident some time ago, since which he was deficient in intellect, and had been removed from the local hospital to Gladesville—transmitted to Darlinghurst, in order that inquiries might be made into the statement. If that were true, then some part of the sentence he felt it his duty to impose would be suspended. He would also represent to the authorities a threat made by the accused in court as to what he would do to the girl, which was certainly an extraordinary threat for a man on his trial to make in an open court. The sentence was that the prisoner be kept in penal servitude for five years, and to be whipped at Darlinghurst, on the 31st March, the number of strokes to be twenty. He would transmit the letter to Darlinghurst, and also represent the other matter to the authorities.
