LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.

…
Yesterday, at the East Maitland police court, Charles Newton, mariner (a man of very respectable appearance, and who seemed to feel his position very keenly), was charged with having assaulted a male child, named Phipps, at East Maitland, on the 29th December. The case was not heard with closed doors, and a large crowd of the pruriens-minded were present at the proceedings. Accused, who had evidently been drinking very heavily was committed for trial at the Quarter Sessions to be held in March next.
