POLICE COURTS.
———◦———
AMERICAN CONSUL ASSAULTED.

A sailor named John Greig, from the American ship Emily Reed, appeared at the Water Police Court yesterday on a charge of assaulting Orlando H[arrison] Baker, American Consul, on the 21st inst.

According to the evidence of Mr Baker, the accused came to his office to be paid off. Accused demanded his pay in a loud tone, and began creating a disturbance. He was put out of the office with the assistance of the lift attendant, and he then struck Mr Baker in the mouth.

In his defence the accused stated that he was a British subject. When he called for his pay at the consul’s office he was told to return later. On returning he was told he would not be paid off at all. He was then ordered out of the room, and while being pushed out struggled.

Greig was fined £2, or in default 21 days’ hard labour.

Accused pleaded guilty. Mr Wilshire reminded Jones that he was an old offender, and sentenced him to six month’s hard labour. [According to the NSWPG 4 Apr 1906, p. 122, entry: “Thomas Hurdis (aka Claridge) (15), charged with stealing from the residence of Paul Robey, clothing, &c., value £5 6s. (portion recovered), the property of William Bryant and Sydney (or Stanley) Bullivant, … Hurdis sent to the Carpenterian Reformatory until he attains the age of 18.”]

ULTIMO MYSTERY.
———◦———
Man Found Dead in Street.
————
How Was His Jaw Broken?
————

The police are making efforts to unravel a certain amount of mystery that surrounds the death of a middle aged man, which occurred early this morning.

At about twenty minutes to 4 o’clock, the man was found unconscious in Ultimo-road, near Harris-street, and he was taken by the Civil Ambulance to Sydney Hospital, where he was found to be dead. The body was then taken to the morgue, and in the man’s clothes the police found some papers bearing the name of Peter Jones, and an address in Fitzroy-street, Surrey Hills. The man is not, however, known at the address.

The police have been making inquiries as to how the man met his death, but so far have not met any success. He had a fractured jaw, and a story has been told that a woman saw him walk across the road and suddenly reel and collapse. The medical opinion however, is that he did not receive his injuries in the fall. It is considered that he was in all probability the victim of an assault.

Further inquiries are being made, and meanwhile the police would be glad of any information that would assist to establish the man’ identity. He was 5ft 6in high, of thin build, and had brown hair almost bold, a brown moustache turning grey, and grey eyes. Several teeth were missing, he had a star tattooed on his left forearm, and a man’s head and two crossed swords on his right forearm. He was dressed in a navy serge suite , a soft green felt hat, and heavy boots.

MYSTERIOUS DEATH
————
MAN FOUND IN ULTIMO STREET
————

Early yesterday morning a man, in the pocket of whose coat was found a paper on which was written the name Paul Jones, [sic] was found unconscious in Ultimo-road, near Harris-street. Civil Ambulance took him to Sydney Hospital; but, on arrival there, he was dead. An address, Fitzroy-street, Surry Hills, was on some of the papers in his possession; but he was not known there. On examination at the hospital it was found that the man’s jaw was fractured, and the medical opinion is that this injury was the result of an assault. There were lacerations about the throat and other marks which indicated that he had been garrotted and beaten. It was stated that a woman had seen him collapse in the street. The police are making enquiries.
