SECOND DAY.
——–
The August sittings of the Newcastle Court of Quarter Sessions were continued before His Honor Judge Fitzhardinge, yesterday. Mr AF Dawson prosecuted on behalf of the Crown.
…
RELEASED ON RECOGNISANCES.
——–
A boy named Francis Watt, aged 15 years, pleaded guilty to assaulting another boy named G[eorge] H[enry] Taylor, at the Junction, Newcastle. He said that he did not know that he was doing any harm. Mr TA Braye called evidence of character. The boy’s father, Frank Watt, a milk vendor, deposed that he had never had any fault to find with the boy. John Matthews, a miner, residing at the Junction, said he had known the boy for years, and always thought well of his general conduct and industry. Mr Braye applied for the prisoner to be dealt with under the First Offenders’ Act . His Honor said he would not sentence the boy as he was under the age of 16 years. He would deal with hum under the 429th section of the Act, and release him under one recognisance (his father’s) of £40, and two sureties of £20 each, for his good behaviour for a period of three years.
