Alexander Riley, for a serious offence, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. Frank Hartley Delaney, for embezzlement as a Public servant, was sentenced to two years. The money had been repaid, and the sentence was suspended under the First Offenders’ Act. The sentence imposed on James Higgins for fraudulent misappropriation of £59 3s 3d, was ordered to be suspended under the First Offenders’ Act , on prisoner making restitution of the amount, which he promised to do. Arthur Beard, for perjury, was sentenced to five years’ penal servitude at Goulburn. Olive White, for concealment of birth, was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment, and the sentence was suspended under the First Offenders’ Act. James Baird, aboriginal, for assault with intent, was sentenced to 18 months’ hard labour. James Henderson, who pleaded guilty to attempting a capital offence at Geurie, was remanded for sentence.

James Copeland pleaded not guilty to wounding Alvina Hitchen, with intent to murder. Mrs Hitchen, whose husband is a butcher at Gilgandra, deposed that she gave accused, who is her cousin, notice to leave the farm, where he had been employed. He subsequently came to the shop and said he would be even with her. She rode out to the farm on February 27, two miles from Gilgandra. When she got to the hut, where Copeland lived, accused came out with a double-barrelled gun and fired. She was struck on the right arm, and fell of the horse. The defence was that the shooting was accidental. The jury were locked up last night, and failed to agree. Prisoner was remanded.
