The first Quarter Sessions were held in Mudgee before Judge Dowling in the year 1859, at the old lock-up, then near the gaol. Old Judge Dowling and Mr Edward Clarke furnished the Court-house with boxes made into tables, &c, borrowed from Messrs Kellett and Rowell’s store. The room was so small that the late WB Dalley, when addressing the “gentlemen of the jury” in a cattle stealing case, struck the prisoner he was defending in the face with his hand, causing much merriment in Court. After that time the Court-house was removed to a room adjoining the Royal Oak Hotel (Lees), now the Mudgee brewery.

Previous to the opening of a case at the Police Court, on Friday last, wherein a woman charged her husband with failing to support her, Mr Edwards, our considerate and humane Police Magistrate, with a note of genuine concern in his voice, asked the parties if there was no possibility of them settling the matter out of the court, so that heir domestic differences could be kept private. One of the parties said no, and with a regretful sigh he listened while the case dragged out its squalid length.
