PARRAMATTA QUARTER SESSIONS.
———◦———
BEFORE JUDGE DOCKER.

…
John Francis Clarke, 16, charged with assault at Merrylands on a child aged 5 years, pleaded guilty. Mr Watkin, instructed by Mr FW Todhunter (assigned by the Crown), appeared for the accused, and asked for leniency on account of being an orphan. He was sentenced to six months’ hard labour in Goulburn gaol, the Judge remarking that he would have ordered a whipping if he had reason to believe that it would be carried out.

PARRAMATTA SESSIONS.

Tuesday, April 26.

(Before His Honor Judge Docker.)

A SHERWOOD CASE.

John Francis Clarke, a lad, was charged with indecently assaulting, on 23rd March, at Sherwood, Martha L[illian] C[lara] Ibbett, a girl five years and eight months of age.

The lad said that he had nothing to say.

In answer to the Judge, the prisoner said that he was 16 years of age.

It appeared that the lad ran away from an uncle’s care, where he had been after he had left his father’s home. Nothing was known previously against the prisoner.

His Honor said that it was very difficult for a Judge to know what was the best thing to be done in a case of that kind. The prisoner had committed an awful offence, such as might, if it had been carried out, have earned a sentence of death.

The prisoner was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labor in Goulburn Gaol. His Honor said that had he thought such a sentence would have been carried out, he would have ordered the lad to be whipped and then have recommended his release.
