NEWCASTLE QUARTER SESSIONS.
——–—•———–
(Before Judge Fitzhardinge.)
The Newcastle Quarter Sessions were continued yesterday in the Newcastle Courthouse. Mr AF Dawson was the Crown Prosecutor.
…
FIRST OFFENDERS.
Arthur Foxton [aka Roydon Frederick] Smith and William Ball, two youths, were charged upon indictments with committing a serious offence and assault upon Claude Baird at Carrington on July 15. Mr AH James appeared for the accused Smith, and Mr TA Braye (Messrs Braye and Cohen) for the accused Ball. Both pleaded guilty on the second count. The first count in the indictments was withdrawn, and the accused were remanded for sentence. In the afternoon they were brought up for sentence. His Honor said they had pleaded guilty of a nasty offence, but as their behaviour in the past had been good, he did not intend to send either of them to gaol. Both of them would be sentenced to imprisonment with hard labour for six months, but His Honor directed that the sentence be suspended upon each of them entering into recognisances for their good behaviour for a period of twelve months, the sureties in each case being self of £10, and another of a similar amount.
