Richard Shailer, 1927

QUARTER SESSIONS
———◦———
PARTING OF THE WEBBER BROTHERS—STANLEY GIVEN ANOTHER
CHANCE—HABITUAL CRIMINAL AT TWENTY-NINE—TWO
YEARS FOR DISGUSTING OFFENCE—“GUILTY WITH NO CRIMINAL
INTENTION”—ACCUSED MAN WANTED HIS CASE STRUCK OUT—
WIDOW TAKEN IN BY PLAUSIBLE ESTATE AGENT—YOUNG MAN
CHARGED WITH SHOOTING AT UNCLE’S BRIDE-TO-BE
——————

Six cases were listed for hearing at the Parramatta Quarter Sessions yesterday.

There was none from the remoter portion of the district from which the grist for this judicial mill is supplied. Four of the committals were from Liverpool; the other two from Parramatta.

One of the Parramatta cases—that of the Webber brothers—embraced six charges against each of the accused.

Judge Armstrong presided. Mr BV Stacy prosecuted for the Crown.

MORE JUSTICES.

The huge army of Justices of the Peace was further augmented, the following being sworn-in in that capacity:—

Edward Strangward Adcock, Alfred Ernest Hodgkinson, Wilson Hirst, Alice Ivy Alma Venus, and James Blake Venus.
…

“SIMPLY BEASTLYy”
———

Richard Shailer, [aka Thomas McNulty], pleaded not guilty to a charge of having committed a serious offence, [indecently assaulting Thomas Robertson, 14], at Menangle on March 16.

    The jury found him guilty.

His Honor described the offence as “simply beastly.”

Shailer’s record showed that he had already served a sentence of two years for a similar offence.

Two years hard labor was again his portion.
…

MIXING THE GENDERS
———

Even Judges and Crown Prosecutors sometimes get slightly mixed.

At the Sessions, yesterday, a young lady entered the witness box to say a few words on behalf of her brother, who was about to be sentenced.

“I see,” said his Honor; “you’re the brother of the accused?”

Of course she had to tell his Honor that she was only the young man’s sister.

In another case, John James Jacobsen was charged with having maliciously shot at Alice Mary Jacobsen.

When the woman went into the box, his Honor wanted to know whether she was any relation to the accused.

The Crown Prosecutor came to the rescue.

“She’s the husband of his uncle,” he explained.
