IMPORTER CHARGED.
——
The hearing of a charge of alleged trading with the enemy was commenced at the Central Police Court yesterday, when Mathias Hamburger, 2 who carries on business as an importer in [95] York-street, city, was proceeded against on two informations charging him with trading, and also attempting to trade, with one of his representatives in Germany.
Mr Manning, instructed by the Commonwealth Crown Solicitor, appeared for the prosecution, and Mr TR Bavin, instructed by Messrs Mark Mitchell and Forsyth, for the defendant.
The charge against Hamburger was that, on or about November 3 last, he sent a bank-draft for £700 to A Escoffier Figlio, San Remo, Italy, to be forwarded to Wilhelm Ceelen, Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany, for purchases made by him on Hamburger’s behalf.
Only two witnesses were examined, a Customs’ officer, who made a search of Hamburger’s business premises, where a quantity of correspondence was found, and a member of the Censor’s staff, who translated some letters sent by and addressed to the defendant, which had been intercepted in the post.
The further hearing of the charge was adjourned till next morning, at the Water Police Court.

CRIMINAL.
———
At the Metropolitan Sessions, before Judge Hamilton (Mr AF Dawson prosecuting), James Brown, for whom Mr PK White appeared, was charged with having, at Sydney, on June 16, assaulted Walter Leamington [aka Walter Levington; Walter Lewington], a military policeman. The jury found a verdict of guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on account of previous good character. The sentence was six months’ imprisonment, with hard labor, in Goulburn Gaol.
Sydney Francis Davis, a young man, pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing three pairs of rabbits, the property of the Chief Commissioner for Railways and Tramways, at Sydney, on June 16. Mr JW Abigail appeared for accused, a shunter at Darling Harbour railway yard, who denied taking the rabbits from a truck. He admitted picking them up in the yard and throwing them into the lamp-room, as his duty enjoined upon him. Afterwards he informed one of the railway officials of what he had done. The jury acquitted, and accused was discharged.
