DISGUSTING CONDUCT IN BUSY STREET.
————
“I have never known a man, whose conduct was decent when sober, who would descend to indecency when drunk.”
————
The remarks came from Mr Chippendale, DSM, at the conclusion of a case wherein Patrick Ambrose Gleeson, a recent arrival from Mudgee, had pleaded guilty to a charge of behaving indecently in Argyle-street, Parramatta.
Briefly the facts, as related by Sergeant Williamson, were that on Sunday afternoon, a party of young women were proceeding along Macquarie-street, when they observed the accused with his clothing so disarranged as to render his appearance indecent.
Later, when returning via Argyle-street, they again encountered him in the same disgusting condition, and they promptly proceeded to the police station and complained.
A constable was despatched to the scene, and Gleeson was arrested.
DSM: Was the act deliberate, or was accused in such a stupid state that he was unaware of what he was doing.
“We say it was wilful, your Worship,” replied Sergeant Williamson, “and so do the young ladies, who were witnesses.”
As the police statement did not make it clear as to whether the indecency was wilful or not, his Worship adjourned the case for a short period.
Subsequently, a young woman, who was brought forward, told the Court exactly what had happened.
Accused stated that he was a married man, and had no recollection of the occurrence. He had been drinking heavily on the previous day, and may have had a portion of his clothing unbuttoned without his knowledge. He had an overcoat on, which he probably was fastening when the young ladies passed. “I have never committed an offence like this in my life, and have never been before the Court,” said accused.
It was at this stage that Mr Chippendale delivered himself of the comment referred to above.
DSM: In view of the fact that the police know nothing against your previous character, I will be lenient with you. But the public must be protected from such blackguards. You are sentenced to one month’s gaol.
Accused: Couldn’t you inflict a fine, your Worship.
DSM: No. You are perhaps fortunate that I have not sentenced you to six months’, which I have the power to do.

DISGUSTING OFFENCE
Patrick Gleeson, at the Parramatta Police Court, on Monday, was proceeded against n a charge of having committed a disgusting offence in Parramatta Park, last Saturday.
He pleaded not guilty, and was defended by Mr FW Todhunter.
According to the evidence for the prosecution, the offence was committed in the sight of an officer and five girls from the Industrial School, at Parramatta.
The evidence of Beryl Armstrong, the officer in question, was that the disgusting behavior continued for over twenty minutes.
Two of the girls gave corroborative evidence.
Gleeson admitted being there, but denied the allegation as to his conduct.
Under cross-examination, he admitted having served a month in prison for a similar offence.
The magistrate (Mr GS Shepherd) convicted the defendant and sentenced him to six months hard labor.
