THREE MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT.
————

When called up for sentence on Friday last, Val Haines, who pleaded guilty on the previous day to a charge of indecently assaulting a boy, Bruce Wallis, at Warialda, stated: Your Honor, I have no recollection of the crime for which I am here to-day. I had been using liquor and liquers, [sic] and am not used to it, and must have committed the offence as stated by the Police. For this I am extremely sorry, and, as I have been badly gasses at the war, have had 3½ years’ service, and suffered from enteric fever, this has left its effects on me. I have never been in trouble before, and ask for lenient consideration at your hand. I have been in custody for almost two months, being unable to obtain bail. This has taught me a lesson which I shall never forget.

In answer to his Honor Judge Mocatta, the Deputy Clerk of the Peace stated that the keeper of the Gaol at Narrabri reported that the prisoner had been in custody from 29th December, 1924. He was arrested at Warialda on 18th December, 1924.

His Honor: I am afraid that your excuse that you were under the influence of liquor can hardly be availed of, as you, in this case, seemed to work on a system. You made arrangements with the two boys some time before the offence was committed. This is a horrible offence, and your conduct, when you pretended to act as guide and mentor for Boy Scouts, is certainly not in keeping with what you should have done. However, you have been given a good character, and that, coupled with your mental condition, will be taken into account. I sentence you to be imprisoned with hard labour in the gaol at Narrabri for three months.
