Ernest Milton Newey, aged 16, was charged with bestiality [with a mare ] near Brocklesby.
He pleaded guilty to the charge.
Captain Storkey, VC, prosecuted for the Crown, and Mr FW Tietyens appeared for accused. He suggested that on account of the boy’s age he should not be sent to gaol but to some institution.
Judge Bevan said it was really a case for a good birching. He would treat accused as a first offender, and impose a sentence of 12 months’ imprisonment, to be suspended upon sureties of £50 to be of good behaviour for 12 months.

A SENTENCE SUSPENDED.
Ernest Milton Newey, 16, pleaded guilty to a charge of bestiality. Mr Tietyens appeared for the accused.
Mr Tietyens said that the case made one wonder if accused was in his right senses. He asked that accused be not sent to prison, as it would be better to send him to a reformatory.
His Honor, in reviewing the case, said the best punishment in such a case was a good birching. He would treat it as a first offence, on account of the youth of accused.
Accused was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, to be suspended on accused entering into a bond of £25, with one surety of £25, to be of good behavior for 12 months.

QUARTER SESSIONS.
Albury, Tuesday.
At the Albury Quarter Sessions to-day, before Judge Bevan, Ernest Milton Newey, 16, pleaded guilty to a charge of having committed an unnatural offence near Brocklesby. The Judge said that, instead of accused being brought before a court of justice, his offence would have been fittingly met by submitting him to a birching. He sentenced the boy to 12 months’ imprisonment, but liberated him on good behaviour sureties for 12 months. He hoped the exposure of the Court proceedings would have the effect of improving the boy’s sense of moral responsibility. Stanley Owen and John Glynn were charged with stealing 30 bags of wheat from a stack at Ryan, near Henty, owned by John Darling and Sons, wheat buyers, on February 11. Owen pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment. Glynn was found not guilty.
