SERIOUS OFFENCE AT
WOODSTOCK
————[§]————
MIDDLE AGED MAN SENTENCED
TO 12 MONTHS’ IMPRISONMENT.
———

This morning Joseph Ruane was charged with at Woodstock on 23rd January indecently assaulting a boy, [Martin Andrew Hudson], 13 years of age.

Accused, who was undefended, pleaded guilty.

The Crown Prosecutor (Mr Stacy) said there were two previous convictions against accused, one for offensive behaviour in South Australia, and the other for being drunk and disorderly.

His Honor said he would not take any notice of them, as they were not offences of the same nature.

Accused said he had been drinking. He walked from Cowra to Woodstock, where he had more drink. He then went out about half-a-mile and had more drink with some friends. He got muddled and did not know what he was doing. If he committed the offence he was very sorry. He had been in custody six weeks and had received a letter from the Department stating his pension had been stopped. He thought being locked up had something to do with it.

Accused was remanded for sentence until 2 o’clock.

Upon resuming, His Honor said he had taken into consideration all that accused had said, but he could not give very much weight to it owing to the extreme youth of the boy. The sentence was that accused be imprisoned for one year in Bathurst Gaol with hard labor, to date from January 23rd.

Before Mr J Dough an, JP, in the Grafton Police Court yesterday, Joseph Ruane, 49, was charged with having unlawfully begged alms in Prince street Grafton.

Constable Norman Jackson said that about 4.30 pm on Monday last he was on plainclothes duty in Prince street when defendant approached him and said “Hello Snow, how are you? Have you a cigarette about you?” He (the constable) said that he had not. Then defendant said, “I’ll tell you a good joke, Snow. I was down in the hotel a while ago. I saw a couple of ‘traps,’ and one was a bit like you, too. I was just going to put the fangs into them. I was lucky. I heard after that I was talking to Paterson, the screw.” Defendant then asked the constable to give him “a couple of bob,” stating that he had been having “a pretty tough time.” Previous to this conversation, Constable Jackson said he saw defendant intercept at least six persons in the same street. He would have a short conversation with them and they would leave him. Defendant, who pleaded not guilty, was sentenced to imprisonment for seven days, with hard labor.
