EX-MLA AS WITNESS.
——
Mr SD Alldis, a former member of the Legislative Assembly, was a witness in a case at the Central Police Court yesterday, when Victor Cohen, 34, a school teacher, was charged with using indecent language in Belmore-road, Randwick, on April 27.
It was stated by the police that Cohen and Alldis were together about 7 pm on April 27. They appeared to have been drinking, and Cohen used language which was audible to Constable Birchill.
Cohen denied that he used the expression complained of, and was supported by Alldis, who said that neither he nor the defendant were under the influence of liquor. The constable had made a mistake.
In dismissing the charge against Cohen Mr J Laidlaw, SM, said that he had nothing to say about the honesty of the constable’s evidence. He was of the opinion that, as stated by the defendant, the constable had shown a disposition to withdraw the case when spoken to by Mr Alldis at the police station after the arrest.

ILLEGAL BETTING.

FOUR CONVICTIONS.
——
Four convictions were recorded in the Central Police Court yesterday in cases in which breaches of the betting law were alleged.
William Brown was fined £50 for having used a refreshment room for the purpose of gambling, and on a similar charge concerning premises in Clovelly-road, Clovelly, Cecil Moore was fined £30.
Fines of £20 were imposed on Griffith Jones and Rupert H Struthers, each of whom admitted a charge of having been in the street on Saturday for the purpose of betting.
In the case of Jones, who is a pensioner, Mr Laidlaw, SM, said that he was obliged under the Act to impose a fine of £20. The defendant was given time to pay.
Sergeant Caban, who prosecuted, said that the principals should be made to pay in such cases.
