SIR,—Travelling north from the Hunter in search of a home, one cannot but feel surprised at the extravagant waste of public money, which is going on in some of the districts through which one passes, and I propose very briefly to direct public attention to a few.
…
Coming on to the Nambucca River my attention was drawn to extensive brick premises being erected at a place called Macksville, which a resident of an adjoining township higher up the river described as an improper place for such a building, claiming that it should never have been erected there at all. On the merits or demerits of the site I do propose to dwell, but against an expenditure of nearly £3000 at such a place, I do enter my protest., I learnt the vote was passed by the late Freetrade Government, but the responsibility of accepting the tender layed (so I was informed) with the present Ministry, and it is a serious matter that members of Parliament should be allowed to influence Ministers to erect such buildings, where £1000 for a wooden structure would suffice for the next 20 years—with what object (?) but to secure the votes of the electors of Macksville for all time. “He got us the Court-house” will be the election canvasser’s plea.

WASTEFUL EXPENDITURE ON THE
NORTH COAST DISTRICTS!
SIR,—Your correspondent “A Chalmers” is responsible for the heading under which comes a whole column in your issue of this morning, which I dropped on during the trip from Lismore to Woodburn in the river steamer.

4. “The Macksville Court-house.” This building was erected to take the place of a wooden structure fallen to decay, and is the only building for holding police, land or district courts in the Nambucca district. There is no Court-house or suitable place to secure a prisoner during a short imprisonment nearer then 40 miles, and it is open to question whether there would not be more extravagance in erecting a wooden-building to cost £1000, only to be eaten by white ants in a few years (like the old Court-house), or the present brick building for much less than your correspondent states.

BRIEF MENTION.
————
…
We saw the steamer Euroka at Macksville wharf of Friday last, and the river was quite lively with punts, droghers, and boats.
Rev PW Ahern visits the Nambucca next week, and conducts services at Bowra and Macksville on Sunday, November 26.
…
Macksville should be an important place some day if her people but fight for their rights. The waterway up to Macksville from the Heads is favorable to progress, if the people go the right way to work.
…
Macksville police station and quarters are to be renovated. A new stable has just been built by Mr Boulton. Constable JT Lawler, who is in charge, will then have the most comfortable police quarters along the line.
The courthouse at Macksville is also a very convenient building, nicely fitted up.
