Samuel Berry was charged with bestiality. The alleged offence took place in a pig-stye at Tarago on Friday last. Four witnesses were examined, and their evidence was of such a nature as to justify the bench in committing accused to take his trial at the Quarter Sessions to be held in Goulburn on 12th December. The case was heard with closed doors.

UNNATURAL OFFENCE AT TARAGO.

Samuel Berry was charged with committing an unnatural offence [with a pig]  at Tarago on the 33rd [sic] day of November, 1883.

His Honor ordered all females and boys to be removed from the court.

The Crown-Prosecutor briefly opened the case, and several persons deposed to seeing prisoner in the act of committing the offence with which he was charged.

During the hearing of the case, the details of which were most shocking, and totally unfit for publication, his Honor expressed his surprise that any public-spirited man could remain in court during the hearing of such a disgusting case, and issued an order to the effect that one man in the gallery, whom he detected laughing, should be instantly removed from the court.

This was the case for the prosecution.

His Honor having summed up, the jury retired for the consideration of their verdict, which, after a short while, they announced as one of “guilty of the attempt to commit an unnatural offence.”

His Honor sentenced the prisoner to three years’ imprisonment, with hard labour, in Goulburn gaol.
