LOCAL and GENERAL.

…
A man named Henry Williams, alias Stephens described as a cook was arraigned before His Worship, the Police Magistrate Mr JL Shropshire, last Monday, for an alleged offence of a most terrible and serious character on a boy named Lancelet James Thornburn Lowman, said to have been perpetrated on Saturday afternoon between 3 and 4 o’clock in a bedroom at the rear of the Wentworth Hotel. After hearing the evidence the PM committed accused to take his trial at Broken Hill on 20th August, next, and on application by accused granted bail self in L200 and 2 sureties of L100 each. Praise is due to Mr JW Thorn, for the prompt action he took in this matter, and also to Constable Dole and Senior Sergeant Bear for their speedy arrest. From their evidence it appears that accused when being questioned on the bridge attempted to cut his throat with a pocket knife, but was frustrated by Constable Dole who rushed and threw accused and held his hands, whilst the Sergeant wrenched the knife from him. Accused bore a slight wound on his neck when in the dock, and his shirt collar was blood-stained.

THE [WENTWORTH] SESSIONS.
———◦———
(Before His Honor Judge Gibson).

Mr CG McMahon JP, occupied a seat on the Bench, as Acting Sheriff.

————

Henry Williams was charged with having committed an indecent assault on one Lancelot [James] Thornburn Lowman, a male person, in May last.

Mr W Bevan appeared to prosecute for the Crown and Mr W Cater appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty.

The Judge having perused the depositions.

Mr Cater addressed for the accused, who he stated had the prevailing fault of bushmen of knocking down his cheque, but his failing had never before led him into such a position as he was in to-day, and which would preclude him following his occupation of a cook in his usual district, consequently, though an elderly man he would have to strike out for new fields. As was generally known these boys were in the habit of pestering men like accused for money.

His Honor said the police did not give accused a very good report, showing, in fact that he was anything but a respectable man. There had been 5 convictions with fines ranging from 20s to £5, and one in Aug 1899 of maliciously wounding a constable for which he had received 18 months in Wilcannia. In regard to the present case he would say little, as it was disgustingly revolting and fortunately it had gone no further than indecent assault; if he had committed the whole offence, he (His Honor) would have flogged accused. He intended giving him 2 years, but as he had been in gaol 4 months the sentence of the court would be 1 year and 8 months in Bathurst gaol.

The court was adjourned sine die.
