TARIFF AND PARLIAMENTARY
SALARIES.
———◦———

Sydney, Tuesday.

The “Daily Telegraph” says that if ever there was a time when the clarion note of leadership might have been expected from Mr GH Reid it is now, when a Government comes to Parliament with a gift of a 50 per cent rise in members’ salaries, and asks it to impose a crushing burden of Customs taxation on the Commonwealth. “But what do we get?” it queries. Then answers: “Hesitation, followed by something in the nature of an apology.”
The Chamber of Commerce has strongly protested against the tariff. The president also asserted that the chambers of commerce had to the Prime Minister against increasing the Federal members’ salaries, which he characterised as a serious breach of faith with the electors.

Melbourne, Tuesday.

The Bendigo Labor leagues have carried a resolution disapproving of the increase of Federal members’ salaries.

ALLEGED BESTIALITY.
———

At the Quarter Sessions, before Judge Gibson, a case of alleged bestiality against a young man named T[heodore] H[erbert] Beck was heard to-day. The evidence was of a filthy and revolting character, but the jury didn’t think it sound enough to convict on, as a verdict of not guilty was returned, and accused was discharged. Mr AJ Hall appeared for accused.

The dispatches by the North mine last week totalled 510 tons of leady concentrates.

“For years past,” says Mrs Catherine Weeks, Bowral, NSW, “I have made it a point to always keep Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy in my home. Just as soon as any members of my family show symptoms of a cough or cold I give them a dose, and it invariably checks the complaint.” For sale by all chemists and storekeepers.
