QUARTER SESSIONS.

Mr JN Mason prosecuted for the Crown.
…
FIVE YEARS’ PENAL SERVITUDE.
John Hughes (43) was convicted on a charge of having committed a serious offence, [bestiality], at Leichhardt, on November 25.
His Honor said the best thing he could do with the prisoner would be to give him five years’ penal servitude. “Goodness knows,” said his Honor, “how long you will serve; I don’t know. I cannot make any recommendation.”

JUDGE’S SUGGESTION.
———◦———
RATIONAL LEGISLATION.
Sydney, Wednesday.
John Hughes was found guilty at Sessions of an offence at Leichhardt, with a recommendation that accused should be mentally examined. His Honor, in imposing a sentence of five years penal servitude, remarked that it was one of those extraordinary cases to meet which rational legislation had been adopted in some of the United States of America, where a surgical operation, said His Honor, is portion of the punishment. If similar legislation had been adopted in this country, as it should have been long ago but for the silly superstition sentimentalism of some people such cases would be rare occurrence, while a service would be done to the offenders to the community at large.

QUARTER SESSIONS.
(Before Judge Murray.)
Crown Prosecutor, Mr JN Mason.
A SERIOUS CHARGE.
John Hughes, 43, was arraigned on a serious charge at Sydney on November 25, 1912.
Accused pleaded not guilty.
A verdict of guilty was returned by the jury. A recommendation was made that he should be medically examined.
On imposing a sentence of five years’ penal servitude, and making reference to the jury’s recommendation, his Honor said such a sentence seemed to be the best thing he could do for the prisoner. He did not know how long he would serve, but he would not make any recommendation for remission of any portion of the sentence.
