FALSE PRETENCES.
———◦———
SALESMAN FINED.

At the Central Police Court yesterday Christian Carl Eppers, 40, a salesman, appeared before Mr Giles-Shaw, SM on two counts to false pretences. The first charge set out that at Sydney in March 5, Eppers pretended to William Watmough Swanston that he held contracts for the construction and installation of a number of septic tanks, the value of the work amounting to about £3,500. One contract provided for the installation of a large septic tank at the Clyde Engineering Works. It was alleged that Eppers promised that upon payment of £25 for the purchase of shares in the business he would employ Swanston as superintendent of works, and pay him a salary of £500 a year. By these means, it was stated, Eppers obtained from Swanston the sum of £2, with intent to defraud. The second charge was that by similar methods, Eppers, at Eastwood, on March 5 attempted to obtain from David Caskey the sum of £10 by posing as the representative of the Aero Septic Tank Company, Ltd.

Police-Prosecutor Spyer stated that the accused was known to the police as the promoter of bogus companies, including operations at Sale (V) and Bundaberg (Q). He had tried to float a meat company with the slogan “Cheap meat for the people.” In this way he had made a good living.

Eppers pleaded guilty, and on each charge was fined £10, in default two months’ hard labour.
