SERIOUS OFFENCE
———:○:———
OFFENDER COMMITTED FOR
TRIAL.
————

Thomas Williams was committed for trial at the [Narrabri] police court on Monday, by the PM, Mr A[ugustus] K[ieran] Loftus, on a charge of indecent assault upon a small boy, [Noel Herbert Hulbert, 9].

Inspector Goodwin, at the commencement of the case, informed the PM that evidence to be had was of a revolting character and suggested an order should be made concerning the hearing of the case.

The PM, however, said “that if the public wanted to stop and listen to the evidence that was a matter entirely for themselves.”

The broad hint from the PM was sufficient to clear the court, and apart from officials the court was empty during the hearing of the case.

After hearing evidence Williams was committed for trial to the next sitting of the Quarter Sessions in Narrabri on October 2. £150 bail was allowed. The PM informed the accused that he could apply for legal aid if he required to do so.

Williams did not make any reply when asked if he wished to say anything, and only asked witness a very few questions.

John Tuckey was brought before the PM by Constable Green, who deemed him insane, on Monday, and was remanded for a period of eight days under medical observation. Constable Green stated that he met Tuckey wandering about Narrabri West, and he told him that he was ready to be hung at six o’clock, and that he had been drinking with a one legged man. He also told him he wished to make a full confession, and that he had been drinking heavily. Witness said his habits appeared queer, and he was showing people where the ropes were to be on his chest.

BIGGER RUBBISH TIP
————
COUNCIL APPLIES FOR TWO
ACRES.
————

The Narrabri Municipal Council has written to the Narrabri PP Board asking for a further grant of two acres alongside the present rubbish tip. The letter stated the area now held as the top was congested and the shire was complaining of tins and rubbish on the roadway.

The directors decided to grant the extra acres, but one or two expressed the opinion that it was hardly a place for a rubbish tip owing to its conspicuous position. It was only a matter of time, they said, when the rubbish would be covering the reserve.
