MALICIOUS FIRE.
———◦———
CORONER’S VERDICT.
——
FOREST LODGE FACTORY.
——

The City Coroner (Mr Fletcher) found yesterday that a fire on August 13, in the clothing factory of WE Ward and Co Ltd, 2a Parramatta-road, Forest Lodge, had been maliciously caused by some person or persons unknown.

Three sticks of phosphorous were found on the floor.

Alfred Hurst Lowe, buyer for the company, said that while he was waiting for the man in charge of the despatch-room to open up he heard the glass in the front window break. When the despatch man arrived two or three minutes later they went round and saw smoke coming from the counter inside the window.

Herbert Ward, factory manager, said the company was in voluntary liquidation. Its assets amounted to £65,000 (plant £5,000, bad debts £31,000, stock £20,000), and its liabilities to £52,000. Insurances amounted to £38,000—£4,000 more than the value of the contents.
