DEATH ON TRAIN: When the western mail train arrived at Lithgow the body of an infant which had died on the train was removed to the morgue at the local hospital. The infant’s mother, Mrs Bayliss, of Narromine, was taking the child to the city for a change, as it had been ill. The baby had a sudden relapse aboard the train.

DRUNKENNESS, Etc.

Two first offenders were dealt with for drunkenness. Harry Davis (38) was fined £3, in default one month’s imprisonment for having used improper language on the Market wharf. Albert Cooper (30), labourer, was charged with having committed an objectionable offence [expose his person] on the Newcastle beach on January 9. He pleaded not guilty. The defendant [Albert Cooper] had nothing to say in refutation of the charge, except that it had been “put over” on him. The magistrate said that during his experience, which had been a very long one, he had never listened to a worse case. He was seriously considering whether he should recharge him, and send him for trial. Fortunately the Vagrancy Act gave him power to deal with him. The defendant was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
