CAUGHT RED-HANDED
———◦———
Two Year’s Imprisonment.
———
Following the conviction of Albert Williams, 38, a labourer, who was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment at the Central Police Court yesterday on five charges of theft, Sergeant Napper (police prosecutor) withdrew 70 other charges.
It was stated that defendant’s criminal history dated back to 1912, including convictions for forgery and larceny at Melbourne and Bendigo, Victoria.
Peter O’Grady, a miner, of Broken Hill, gave evidence that on returning to his room on the third floor of a residential in Albion-street Surry Hills, on July 5, he discovered Williams with his hand on a portmanteau containing three £5 notes and a diamond ring worth £60. However, defendant was not in the least disconcerted. “Good day,” he remarked casually, indicating a towel which he carried around his neck. “Where is the bathroom? I was looking for it, but I get into the wrong room. I’m sorry.” The portmanteau had been forced open. Grabbing Williams by the throat, witness exclaimed, “A man ought to choke you.” He twice struck defendant, who said, “I’m glad I didn’t actually take anything.”
Detective-sergeant Miller stated that the majority of the 75 charges were mainly due to what Williams had told the police after his arrest. In many instances property stolen from residentials by defendant could not be recovered. It had been pawned, and sold in various suburbs.
