THE ANCIENT GAG

Coal Dust of Newcastle
————

Judge Sheridan has found a new old reason for mumbling.

A witness at Newcastle Quarter Sessions yesterday shot out his evidence in a torrent of words through clenched teeth.

Counsel had pleaded with the man “open his mouth and speak,” and then Judge Sheridan took a hand.

“Why don’ you open your mouth,” asked the Judge. “I don’t know what is the matter with some of you Newcastle witnesses. Is it because you are afraid of getting your mouth full of coal dust?”

COURT OBSERVANCE
———◦———

An air of solemn silence hung over Newcastle Quarter Sessions to-day while the court stood for two mlnutes in remembrance of Armistice Day.

Court business was suspended as the Judge, bewigged barristers, the accused, and the crowded gallery stood at attention.

Then there was a rustle through the court-room as the Judge resumed his seat and the court business proceeded.
