During last week end two of the largest meetings of leaseholders on the Irrigation Areas were held at Griffith and Yenda. The meetings were called by the Leaseholders’ Campaign Committee for the purpose of obtaining public endorsement of the action taken by the convening body. Several speakers declared that the present finding of Mr Justice Pike in the land conversion case was entirely satisfactory to settlers. The meeting decided to recommend all leaseholders to apply for conversion to leasehold, and, in support of the decision, Mr W Moses said that the question did not concern the relative merits of freehold and leasehold. Conversion was the only safeguard against re-appraisement after 25 years, which would give the Irrigation Commission an opportunity to secure an accrued value of the land. Another benefit would be the curtailment of the activities of the commission. A motion similar to the one carried by the Government that the settlers considered that they had been given no effective voice on the Soldier Settler Classification Committee was also carried. Another motion was carried demanding the right of settlers applying to the civilian classification tribunal to be represented in any way they choose to assist them to state their case.
In view of the fact that Griffith has waited so long for the erection of its new post office and a court-house the last meeting of the Progress Association decided to request the WC and I Commission to make representation to the Departments concerned with a view of expending the provision of these needful public offices.

Progress Association, as usual had a captured long list of “urgent wants” for its consideration last meeting. Some of them, notably the provision of a court house. And postal building. Court still is held in a tiny room the CPS, the sergeant, and a delinquent make a crowd, and Griffith’s outside policeman has to go outside to turn round. Tired of making its own ever-recurring requests for the much needed public buildings the PA this time decided to ask the irrigation Commission to move in the matter, which, in the face of the association’s oft repeated opinion of the commission, is an illuminating evidence of the depths of despair plumbed by association members.

The work of erecting the new courthouse at Griffith is well advanced. The site is situated on the western side of the public park, with the main entrance fronting Ulong-street and side entrances from Railway-street and Banna-street. The accommodation provided consists of the courtroom 30ft wide, 40ft long, and 15ft in height, having top, side, and rear lights. Entrance is obtained from the arched vestibule on the west, through a lobby, the walls are carried up above the ridge of the roof, and support the fleche, which forms a feature of the design.
On the south side of the courtroom the office and private room for CPS, have been placed, also a room for magistrates. On the north side of the courtroom are rooms for witnesses, also a room for solicitors, and a room for the sheriff, while at the front rooms have been allotted for the Department of Agriculture. On the eastern side are the jury rooms, with yard and lavatory accommodation. The design is simple, yet dignified, as befits a courthouse in a country town. The building is being erected in brick, with the roof of titles.
